Chamont, also known as Tanneries de Chamont, is a tannery established in 1903 in Saint-Pardou-la-Rivière, France. The company has exclusively produced vegetable-tanned leathers for over 100 years. While there were over 60 tanneries in France when Chamont was founded, now there are only about 20, and very few specialize in vegetable-tanned leather.
The images above show Chamont’s French saddle, crafted from sturdy French saddle leather, known for its elegant aesthetic. This type of leather makes up 85% of Chamont’s production and is used for saddling horses. The remaining leather is used for equestrian gear and small leather goods. It is trusted by the equestrian industry for its durability, as it is mainly used for harnesses.
This image displays the inside of a tannery provided by Chamont, showing hides sourced from high-quality adult cows. Due to challenges in obtaining ideal hides in Japan, most of the hides used by Chamont are purchased from Bavaria and Scandinavian countries. Large adult cattle are prone to scratches and injuries, making the selection process difficult.
After the tanning process, the leather is flattened using a special machine. Then, it is greased, dyed, and finished into French saddles. It is commonly used for saddlery because it is resistant to bending and stretching. Interestingly, despite being tanned, it is relatively unaffected by water.
The leather is strong and durable but may have surface scuff marks and changes in the folded part. These surface scuff marks can be removed with brushing or wiping, and the folded part may appear whitish.
Next, we want to demonstrate how each color changes over time and the color variations. To begin, the color we will focus on is NOIR, which is essentially black. Despite the difference in the model, this sample shows how the color changes after several months of use. The matte surface has transitioned to a glossy texture, and the black color has become even darker and more noticeable.
The next color is MASTER, which we imagine as a deep brown or chocolate hue. Compared to the unused sample on the top, the aged sample on the bottom shows an intensification of luster and color. Additionally, the maintenance method mainly involves dry wiping and brushing, and even so, it has become sufficiently shiny.
The final color is called IRISH. It’s a shade of burgundy with orange undertones, and it adds depth to the leather with a glossy shine. Three items used the samples in separate environments, and they all showed significant changes, indicating that the material changes over time and is easy to enjoy.
